From CBS News' John Bentley:

(STERLING HEIGHTS, MICH.) – Trying to wrest the mantra of change away from their opponents, John McCain and Sarah Palin told the crowd here that Barack Obama and Joe Biden aren’t strong enough to bring reform to the federal government.  More...

From CBS News' Ryan Corsaro:

(LANGHORNE, PA.) - “I know that Joe and Barack are going to work to end this war in Iraq!” yelled Jill Biden to a crowd of over a thousand in an oven-temperature auditorium.

Dressed in a buttercup-yellow skirt suit, Biden introduced her husband to a sea of waving palms and clapping hands.

Joe Biden's town hall event was admittedly off-script at times and intermittently sentimental, though he allowed himself bursts of rage as he railed against Republicans.

“Last night we heard my friend, and I really mean this sincerely…” he said calmly.

“John McCain is my friend. I know of no man or woman I’ve met that has more personal courage than John McCain.”  More...

From CBS News National Correspondent Dean Reynolds

(DURYEA, PA.) - Barack Obama's campaign turned to the general election campaign wary, but still confident of victory in November.

Aides to the Illinois Democrat took in John McCain's speech to the Republican convention last night and said they were "underwhelmed" by it. Voters polled by Democrats had what was described as a "flat" reaction to it.

Specifically, they found a disconnection between McCain's appeal for an end to partisan sniping that came at the end of a week's worth of "unalloyed partisan carpet bombing."  More...

From CBS News' Maria Gavrilovic:

(DURYEA, PA.) It’s been almost 6 months since Obama suggested that people cling to guns because they are bitter, a.k.a. “bitter-gate,” but he is still plagued by questions about his position on gun control. At a town hall meeting today, a voter told Obama that there are rumors that he is going to take away guns. “People love hunting,” the man told Obama.

Obama said he is aware that the issue is being “peddled again and again,” but he assured the crowd that he will not take away guns that are legally obtained.

“I believe in the Second Amendment, and if you are a law-abiding gun owner, you have nothing to fear from an Obama administration!”  More...

From CBS News' Maria Gavrilovic:

(HARRISBURG, Pa) Barack Obama raised $10 million dollars yesterday – a one day record for the campaign –but there’s no such thing as too much money in politics. Tonight, Obama heads to New Jersey for a brief but rather lucrative evening at the home of rocker, Jon Bon Jovi. The event, dubbed as a dinner with Obama, will cost supporters $30,800 per person.  More...

From CBS News' John Bentley:

(ST. PAUL) Ceding the role of attack dog to his running mate, John McCain accepted the nomination of the Republican Party tonight by talking extensively about his military experience and criticizing Barack Obama’s policy positions. “I will keep taxes low and cut them where I can. My opponent will raise them. I will open new markets to our goods and services. My opponent will close them,” McCain said. “I will cut government spending. He will increase it.”

But in an attempt to bolster his maverick image, he criticized Republicans as well. “We lost the trust of the American people when some Republicans gave in to the temptations of corruption,” he said. “We're going to change that. We're going to recover the people's trust by standing up again for the values Americans admire.”

McCain spoke of his years as a POW in Vietnam and the appreciation it instilled in him for the United States. His record of service, he argued, uniquely qualifies him for his presidency. “I've worked with members of both parties to fix problems that need to be fixed. That's how I will govern as President,” he said. “I have that record and the scars to prove it. Sen. Obama does not.”
