TONIGHT ON THE CBS EVENING NEWS

Here’s an early look at what we are working on for tonight’s broadcast of The CBS Evening News from Anchor and Managing Editor, Katie Couric:

Hi everyone,

They’re some of the most popular tobacco products on the market - “light” and “low-tar” cigarettes. And today, they took a big hit from the FTC. It proposed to prohibit tobacco companies from claiming tar or nicotine ratings are government-approved. Have consumers been deceived? Nancy Cordes has the full story.

Next: Disturbing news on violent relationships among teens and pre-teens today: One-in-five 13- and 14-year-olds say their friends are victims of dating abuse, according to a new survey. The results also show that boy-girl relationships may begin younger than most parents think. Kelly Wallace has details.

Also tonight, our investigative unit has a chilling follow-up story on the toxic FEMA trailers. Did the manufacturers of the trailers know about the dangers before the thousands of Katrina victims ever set foot in them? Armen Keteyian has exclusive interviews that tell the story.

The Group of Eight nations today in Japan endorsed cutting in half all emissions of greenhouse gas by 2050. Here at home, one wealthy American, T. Boone Pickens, has some ideas on how America can step up efforts to go green. I spoke to the billionaire oilman with a plan today - and I’ll show you what he had to say about energy tonight.

Something else was on the G8 menu today: discussion about solutions to the world’s food crisis. But talking about global hunger didn’t quell officials’ appetites - instead, they indulged in a lavish eight-course dinner. Mark Phillips has the caviar tour.

I hope you’ll join us,

Katie

PHILADELPHIA’S SUCCESSFUL NEW FORECLOSURE PLAN - About five million homeowners are expected to face a mortgage crisis in the following year. However, one new program in Philadelphia is fighting foreclosure and working to keep families in their homes. A committee of Philadelphian housing advocates and mortgage lawyers started a program called “The Residential Mortgage Foreclosure Diversion Pilot,” which allows homeowners to have a say before their home is foreclosed. So far, the program has achieved impressive results, and congress is noticing. As house and Senate lawmakers try to tackle this national problem, following Philadelphia’s lead could be the answer. We’ll find out how Philadelphia is protecting their homeowners and which other parts of the nation should be doing the same.

EARLY GOES TO THE DOGS: UNIQUE NEW BREEDS - We continue our “Early Goes to the Dogs” series with a look at the newest and strangest breeds that are new to the market. We will be looking at breeds that are becoming more and more popular, such as the Basenji, Petit Bassett Griffon, Otter hounds, and the Chinese Crested. These animals have a fascinating history, look, and lifestyle, and will be live on our plaza. Our resident veterinarian Dr. Debbye Turner will also give us some interesting facts about these unique canines.

RIHANNA PERFORMS ON OUR PLAZA - Pop artist Rihanna has reached a historic milestone in June when her album, “Good Girl Gone Bad: Reloaded” marked its 52nd week on the Billboard 200 chart. The Grammy winner joins our summer concert series Wednesday and performs on our very own plaza!
