Manuel GallegusCorrespondent, CBS News And CBS NewspathNEW YORK | by Bootie Cosgrove-Mather ![]() (CBS) (CBS) Manuel Gallegus has been a Los Angeles-based correspondent for CBS News and CBS Newspath, the Network’s 24-hour television news service to CBS stations and broadcasters throughout the world, since he joined the Network in May 1994. He has covered many of the major stories in the United States and numerous international events during that time. Most recently, Gallegus has been on the campaign trail for CBS Newspath, covering the New Hampshire primary and presidential hopeful debates. On the breaking news front, he covered the devastating wildfires in San Diego, the tornado in Greensberg, Kan., and the coal mine collapse in Huntington, Utah. Gallegus also spent many weeks in New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and reported on the tragic shootings at Columbine High School. Internationally, he has covered three Olympics for CBS Newspath: the Summer Games in Sydney and Athens and the Winter Games in Torino, Italy. Gallegus was in Rome for the death of Pope John Paul II and the election of the new Pope. He reported on earthquakes in Colombia and Mexico and President Jimmy Carter’s historic visit to Cuba. Based in Los Angeles, Gallegus also covers the Hollywood awards season from red carpets at the Academy and Grammy Awards ceremonies and the ongoing sagas of celebrities. He reported on the 2007 writer’s guild strike. Gallegus has divided his time at CBS News, working for CBS Newspath, (since August 1998 and 1994-96, when he joined the Network) and for CBS News (1996-98). As a CBS News correspondent, he reported on the Terry Nichols trial for the Oklahoma City bombing, the Mars Pathfinder landing, the Heaven’s Gate suicides and California’s ongoing battle with natural disasters, from flooding to mudslides to fires. In his first tenure with CBS Newspath, he covered the Republican National Convention in San Diego, as well as the Freemen standoff near Jordan, Mont.; the arrest of the Unabomber suspect; Mexico’s presidential elections; the Zapatista rebel movement in Mexico and the O.J. Simpson murder trial. Prior to joining CBS News, Gallegus worked on-air at KRON-TV San Francisco (1990-94) and KOFY-TV San Francisco (1988-90), where he earned two Radio Television News Directors Association Edward R. Murrow Awards, as well as at KADY-TV Oxnard, Calif. (1988). He was an executive producer for KFTY-TV Santa Rosa, Calif., and began his broadcasting career in 1982 at KRON-TV.
